Thomas A Edison has an assortment of different classes and clubs for students to pick from. Edison students that are interested in writing can substitute their English class with Creative Writing, Journalism, or do clubs to help provide support in improving their skills as a writer.

A major club that helps students not only improve their writing skill but also relieves stress from their personal life is the poetry club. Every Thursday after 9th period inside room 221 personal stories are being told from Edison students, all gathered around to share their next piece.

The poetry club has been a part of the Edison community for longer than a decade, students from all grades come together to share their new poem, allowing their peers to take a peek of their personal life. If you were attending the poetry club you would spend the first half catching up with your friends, once it reached the halfway point of the meeting Mr. Ollivierre, one of the club’s advisors would inform everyone that it was time to share your poems if you had a piece to show. Now due to the seniors of 2025 graduating, the club has lost the majority of their members and are at risk of being shut down.

Mr. Ollivierre, who’s been advisor of the Poetry club since 2019 expressed his concerns for the club’s future.

With fewer members joining or returning to the club, the energy that once made the group special is fading. The discussions that used to inspire new ideas are now rare, and some are starting to question what will happen to the club. The smaller group has also limited the variety of perspectives and writing styles that were once a highlight, making meetings feel more repetitive and less exciting.

Ms. Ramos, who is also an advisor of the poetry club, expressed certain feelings with how little members there are.

The idea of students thinking that poetry club is only about writing poetry and working on writing is an issue as to why there aren’t many members in the club.
